Adherence to treatment is defined as the extent to which a person's behavior, such as taking medication or following a prescribed regimen, corresponds with the recommendations made by a healthcare provider, implying an active collaboration in the treatment process.
HIV stigma is negative attitudes and beliefs about people with HIV. It is the prejudice that comes with labeling an individual as part of a group that is believed to be socially unacceptable.
U=U is when a person is living with HIV and is on effective treatment, it lowers the level of HIV (the viral load) in the blood. When the levels are extremely low (below 200 copies/ml of blood measured) it is referred to as an undetectable viral load. This is also medically known as virally suppressed. At this stage, HIV cannot be passed on sexually.
Protect yourself from HIV: Use condoms correctly every time you have sex, use pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) if you believe you are likely to be exposed to HIV, and avoid sharing drug injection equipment. If you are exposed to HIV and haven’t taken PrEP, consider taking post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) within 72 hours of HIV exposure.
